Frequently asked questions
Planning your fence
If your new fence is a direct replacement for a current one you can think about different types of fence and alternative heights we can help you with that. For a
boundary fence between neighbours it is worth checking your deeds to see who’s fence and responsibility it is, it is also worth discussing your plans, “good fences
make good neighbours”. For new fences it is usually worth checking with the local planning authorities especially if your fence is street facing, or you intend to remove
a hedge. If you are planning on a new fence think about access gates and layout. Where gates are concerned access for lorries etc should really be taken in to
account.
Please also provide a detailed plan of any underground services to avoid any damage to pipes, and cables.
Guild of Master craftsmen
Applicants for the Guild are required to submit confidential references from customers and one of the first questions asked of all referees is whether or not they would
be prepared to recommend the applicant to a relative or close friend. The Guild's council of management include a review of the references when considering the
application for membership as well as ensuring all other criteria are met. Only when they are satisfied that the applicant really does deserve to be called a master
craftsmen is the application approved. This is about as close as you can get to receiving a recommendation from one of your neighbours or friends.

Timber Guarantee
Timber treatment in the last 5-10 years has been difficult. Several of the chemicals used in timber treatment were banned before a suitable proven treatment could be
established. Unfortunately lots of products and timbers were treated and sold unknowingly with insufficient/unsuitable treatment, and have subsequently failed
(rotted).
Now the treatment process has been established and the standards sent with UC4 grade treated timber suitable for posts in contact with the ground. Check you are
getting UC4 Posts.
Chestnut & Oak: Chestnut and Oak is not treated, Oak and Chestnut season and harden with age, Chestnut stakes should last 10 years, Chestnut posts should last
10-20 years, Oak should last 20 years +.
